We’ve got a lot on our plates and are hoping you can make time to help us in the coming months! We need help in a number of areas and on a number of levels, from joining us for a few hours in the sunshine, or taking on lead on a project of your own like brochure design, sponsor recruitment, or creating a healthy recipe book... we welcome and encourage your ideas and leadership!

School Garden Spring Work Days

All Welcome! No Experience Necessary! Drop-in! Rain or Shine, dress for the weather! Upcoming Date(s): Successful school gardens require community support. Please join in the fun care-taking an organic school garden this fall! The garden is used as an edible, educational, resource for students, teachers, and community members. This day we will be transplanting the strawberry bed, closing up the greenhouse for winter weather, planting cover crops, and pulling up a few sweet fresh carrots to taste! A portion of the fresh produce is donated to Food Gatherers. Dress for the weather and prepare for muddy conditions. School Garden & Greenhouse is located on the top of the hill behind Tappan Middle School at 2251 E. Stadium Blvd.

Farm Fresh Fridays

We need parent and community volunteers to help support the Farm-to-School program. Volunteers are needed to be in all Ann Arbor Public School lunchrooms for the first 9 Fridays of the school year, what we call Farm Fresh Fridays. It is on those days that we will be featuring a fresh fruit or vegetable that was grown on a local farm. In the lunchroom on those days, the purpose of volunteer presencse is to help hand out fresh food samples of the featured item and encouraging students to give it a try! Lunch times vary by building, but volunteers need have availability between 11am-1pm on Fridays this fall. Take a look at our calendar for details about the featured food item every week on Fridays and Wednesdays. For more information about our Farm-to-School program or to find out more about the specifics of being involved this fall contact us. Some examples of items featured in ALL Ann Arbor Public Schools thanks to this collaborative initiative are below. (Clicking on these images will open a new window in www.flickr.com)

Farmer Classroom Visits & Tastings

Where: AAPS Elementary Schools When: Various Times . For more information about Farm-to-School or to find out more about the specifics of being involved this schoolyear contact us. We need volunteers to assist local farmers of Tantre Farm, Corn Man Farm, and Harnois Farms with visits into the elementary classrooms of Ann Arbor Public Schools this spring! Volunteer responsibilities include helping wash and cut fresh veggies, helping distribute samples to youth, and aiding the farmer in the classroom throughout this fun and hands-on lesson! Please contact us if you are interested and more details will be provided.

The tasks of the assitant are simple, but essential to make this a success! Farmers will be talking about their individual farm, veggies, parts of plants, and healthy foods. In many cases, they will be sharing samples of many different delicious and tasty veggies from their farm. Volunteer assistants are there to help with veggie prep, distribute samples, help with supervision in the classroom, and engage students as often as possible when they are tasting new items. Farmers may also need help carrying supplies from the car, to the car, from the staff lounge for prep, to the classroom, etc... It is a lot of fun! These classroom visits are made possible through a growing partnership of many community and parent volunteers, partnering farmers, and two organizations working in AAPS, The Agrarian Adventure & MFit. It is an important component of a broader district-wide school lunch initiative sponsored by the Ann Arbor Farm to School Collaboration who is responsible for Farm Fresh Fridays and featured local farm items in the school lunches in fall 2008 and 2007.
